Built near the Pantheon, the Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva stands on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. As Rome’s only medieval Gothic church, it is instantly recognizable by the elephant obelisk that greets visitors at the entrance. Inside, the basilica boasts Michelangelo’s marble sculpture of Christ the Redeemer and magnificently frescoed interiors. One of the highlights is the 15th-century chapel, adorned with paintings by Filippino Lippi. Today, visitors can explore these artistic treasures and immerse themselves in the rich history and serene atmosphere of this unique Roman landmark.
