Basilica da Estrela

In the late 1700s, Queen Mary I of Portugal commissioned the Basilica da Estrela, a striking rococo-style church and convent in Lisbon, to celebrate the birth of her son, Prince Jose. Tragically, the prince died two years before the basilica’s completion, transforming the site into a poignant memorial. Today, visitors can explore the ornate interior, which houses the tomb of the grief-stricken queen, and admire the intricate details that reflect the era’s artistic grandeur.
