Barrio Sur

Directly south of Montevideo’s center, Barrio Sur is a neighborhood deeply rooted in the history and culture of its large Afro-Uruguayan community, who settled here following the abolition of slavery. The area is renowned for being the birthplace of Candombe, a vibrant music and dance style that originated from African slaves. Today, visitors can immerse themselves in the rhythmic beats and dynamic performances that fill the streets, experiencing a living tradition recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage of humanity.
