Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo, one of Rome’s largest public squares, marks the start of the ancient Via Flaminia. The square is framed by the twin churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto on one side, while the 15th-century Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo stands opposite, housing works by Raphael, Bernini, and Caravaggio. A towering Egyptian obelisk rises at the center, drawing the eye. Visitors can also enjoy a scenic overlook from the Pincio Gardens, accessible via a switchback lane and pedestrian stairs.
