The Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, located just outside Phnom Penh, is the most well-known of the ‘killing fields’ where the Khmer Rouge executed over a million innocent Cambodians. A memorial stupa stands at the site, housing the skulls of around 8,000 victims, while bracelets mark the locations of the killings. The center also includes a museum that documents the atrocities committed during this dark period. Visitors can walk through the grounds, see the physical remnants of the tragedy, and learn about the historical context and personal stories of those affected.
