Nestled at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve boasts the highest sand dunes in North America. Spanning approximately 30 square miles (78 square kilometers), the dune field offers a unique landscape for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the vast expanse through activities such as hiking, sand sledding, and horseback riding. The park also provides opportunities for camping and stargazing, while Medano Creek, which flows seasonally, invites visitors to swim and play in its refreshing waters.
