Rishengchang Exchange

The Rishengchang Exchange, established in the 19th century and considered China’s first bank, is nestled at the heart of Pingyao, a UNESCO World Heritage–listed city that once thrived as one of China’s financial centers. This low-rise courtyard complex now serves as a museum, with over 20 rooms dedicated to the history of banking. Visitors can explore the vaults, which still house the original safes where gold and silver were stored, offering a tangible connection to the city’s rich financial past.
