Selarón Steps (Escadaria Selarón)

The Selarón Steps, or Escadaria Selarón, are a vibrant and striking landmark in Rio de Janeiro, marking the boundary between the Lapa and Santa Teresa neighborhoods. Adorned with over 2,000 brightly colored tiles, predominantly in the blue, green, and yellow hues of the Brazilian flag, the steps create a vivid mosaic that winds up the hillside. Chilean artist Jorge Selarón began this project in the early 1990s, transforming a simple staircase into a celebrated work of art. Today, visitors can walk up the 215 steps, taking in the intricate patterns and the occasional tile donated from around the world, making it a unique and engaging experience.
