The Saint Nicholas Princely Church (Biserica Domneasca Sfantul Nicolae) in Curtea de Arges stands as a significant example of medieval architecture south of the Carpathians in Romania. Constructed in the shape of a Greek cross with a dome supported by four pillars, it is the oldest Orthodox church in the region. The exterior showcases alternating layers of stone and brick, while the interior houses some of the oldest surviving Romanian paintings, dating back to the 14th century. These Byzantine-style artworks include a depiction of a pregnant Virgin Mary. Visitors can also view the tomb of Romanian ruler Radu I Basarab, which features a glass pane revealing his garments, adorned with gold and precious stones.
