Built by Germany in the late 1800s, the Fort of Mutzig, also known as Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II, was designed to defend Strasbourg and Metz during the Franco-Prussian War. The fort consists of several dispersed units linked by a network of tunnels, which not only provided shelter but also allowed for the strategic dispersal of artillery. This innovative layout later influenced the design of the Maginot Line. Today, visitors can explore the extensive underground passages and gain insight into the military engineering of the time.
