Basilica di Santa Maria Sopra Minerva

Built near the Pantheon, the Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva stands on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. As Rome’s only medieval Gothic church, it is instantly recognizable by the elephant obelisk that greets visitors at the entrance. Inside, the basilica boasts Michelangelo’s marble sculpture of Christ the Redeemer and magnificently frescoed interiors.
