Mt. Washington, a hilltop neighborhood directly south of downtown Pittsburgh, rises 450 feet (137 meters) above the Ohio and Monongahela rivers. Some of the city’s earliest settlements were established here, and the area was originally known as Coal Hill. In the 1800s, it was renamed Mt. Washington in honor of General George Washington, who visited the site during the American Revolution. Today, visitors can explore this historic neighborhood, which offers panoramic views of the city and its rivers, providing a unique vantage point to appreciate Pittsburgh’s geography and urban landscape.
