The National World War II Memorial, located at the heart of the National Mall in Washington DC, stands as a tribute to the 16 million American soldiers who served in World War II. The memorial features 56 pillars, each representing a U.S. state or territory, and two arches dedicated to the victories in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. More than 4,000 gold stars are inscribed on the Freedom Wall, symbolizing the over 400,000 Americans who lost their lives during the conflict.
