Hassel Island

Hassel Island, situated on the western edge of St. Thomas’ harbor, was once part of a peninsula until the Danish government separated it in the 1860s to improve water circulation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers further widened the channel in 1919, enhancing its isolation. Today, the island is primarily a national park, offering visitors a blend of history and eco-adventure through kayaking, hiking, or snorkeling tours. The historic district encompasses the entire island, featuring ruins from 19th-century English fortifications, such as Shipley’s Battery, and remnants of the Creques Marin Railway. Despite its protected status, Hassel Island also hosts several private estates. Note that official tours are currently on hold due to hurricane damage.
