Established by UNESCO in 1990, the Maya Biosphere Reserve spans an impressive 5.1 million acres (2.1 million hectares) in Guatemala, encompassing a diverse array of natural and cultural treasures. This vast protected area includes Tikal National Park, El Zotz and Naachtún-Dos Lagunas Biotopes, Yaxhá-Nakum-Naranjo National Park, and El Mirador National Monument, along with over 200 other Mayan ruins. The reserve is also home to mountains, rivers, cenotes, and hiking trails, as well as the serene Lake Petén Itza, which serves as a gateway to this expansive wilderness. Visitors can explore ancient archaeological sites, hike through lush forests, and immerse themselves in the rich biodiversity and historical significance of the region.
