The Aguateca Archaeological Site, located on a hill along the Petexbatún Lagoon in Guatemala’s Peten department, offers a unique glimpse into Mayan history. Abandoned around 830 AD after a sudden attack, the site retains a ghost town ambiance, much like Pompeii. Enclosed by a defensive wall, the city features approximately 700 structures, including royal and elite residences and a grand plaza. Visitors can explore these well-preserved ruins, walking through the remnants of a once-thriving Mayan community.
