Lanquín Caves (Grutas de Lanquín)

The Lanquín Caves, or Grutas de Lanquín, are limestone caverns located near Cobán in Guatemala. Revered as the ‘heart of heaven’ and believed to hold the ‘secret of the ages,’ these caves have been sacred to the Mayan people for centuries. The interior is a labyrinth of natural rock formations, and visitors can explore the depths through guided spelunking tours. At dusk, the caves come alive with the sight and sound of thousands of bats emerging into the twilight, creating a mesmerizing natural spectacle. Mayan priests still perform spiritual rituals here, adding to the mystical atmosphere.
