Acatenango

Acatenango, a twin-peaked volcano reaching 13,045 feet (3,976 meters), looms over the city of Antigua in Guatemala’s Central Highlands. Unlike the more frequently climbed Pacaya, Acatenango provides a challenging ascent and breathtaking views of its active neighbor, Fuego. From the summit, visitors can witness Fuego’s frequent eruptions, which send plumes of gas, ash, and hot lava into the sky about every 20 minutes. The trek to Acatenango’s peak rewards hikers with a panoramic vista that includes the surrounding highlands and the fiery displays of Fuego.
