Broome Japanese Cemetery

Founded in 1896, the Broome Japanese Cemetery stands as a poignant reminder of the historical ties between Western Australia and Japan. Located in Broome, it is the largest Japanese cemetery in Australia, containing the graves of over 900 individuals who arrived to work in the pearling industry. Many of these workers met tragic ends, either while diving or from decompression sickness. Today, visitors can walk through the rows of tombstones, each one a silent testament to the lives and sacrifices of those who sought their fortunes in the waters off the Australian coast.
