North of Arusha, near the Gregory Rift and Lake Natron, stands Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the ‘Mountain of God.’ This unique volcano is the only place on Earth to erupt natrocarbonatite, a type of magma that is thinner and less viscous than typical lava, allowing it to flow more quickly. When first erupted, the magma appears black or brown but gradually turns white, resembling snow, as it cools. Visitors can explore the rugged landscape and witness the striking contrast of the dark, fresh lava against the pale, cooled flows, offering a rare glimpse into the dynamic processes of the Earth’s crust.
