Homer Tunnel

The Homer Tunnel, a critical passageway piercing the Darran Mountains, is the sole road route to Milford Sound. Constructed to facilitate access to this remote and stunning part of New Zealand, the tunnel stretches for 0.75 miles (1.25 kilometers). Unlike modern, well-lit thoroughfares, this narrow, steep, and unlit tunnel relies on the headlights of passing vehicles to illuminate its path. Visitors driving or taking a guided tour will experience a unique and essential journey through rugged terrain, making the Homer Tunnel a distinctive feature of the Fiordland & Milford Sound region.
