Kumamoto Castle (Kumamoto-jo)

Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s largest and most storied castles, was constructed by a feudal ruler more than four centuries ago. Spread across vast grounds, the castle comprises dozens of towers and structures, making it a formidable presence in Kumamoto. Historically, it is best known for repelling Japan’s last great samurai rebellion. Despite suffering extensive damage from an earthquake in 2016, visitors can still explore select areas, experiencing the castle’s rich history and architectural grandeur.
