Kanheri Caves

Nestled within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the Kanheri Caves are a series of 109 basalt grottos carved between the first century BC and the 10th century AD. These caves served as monastic dwellings for Buddhist monks over many centuries. Some of the newer caves feature intricate carvings and pillars, alongside rock-cut cisterns that provide a glimpse into the daily life and spiritual practices of the monks. Visitors can explore the cool, dimly lit interiors, tracing the history and craftsmanship of these ancient structures.
