Thor’s Woods (Thórsmörk)

Named for the Norse god of strength and thunder, Thor’s Woods, or Thórsmörk, is a protected natural area in South Iceland, nestled between the Tindfjallajökull stratovolcano and the Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull ice caps. This unique location shields the area from some of the region’s harsher weather, creating a serene environment. Hikers can explore a landscape of rugged mountains, dense birch forests, and glacial rivers, making it one of Iceland’s most impressive hiking destinations. The trails wind through varied terrain, offering visitors a chance to experience the diverse and dramatic beauty of Iceland’s wilderness.
