La India Catalina Monument

At the main entrance of the UNESCO-listed Old Town Cartagena, the La India Catalina Monument stands as a bronze tribute to the daughter of a local chief. Abducted at the age of 14 from her home in Galerazamba, she was later taught Spanish and served as an interpreter and mediator for the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Heredia. This role allowed her to bridge the gap between the Spanish and Indigenous groups, facilitating interactions and negotiations. Today, visitors can observe this historical figure, immortalized in bronze, and reflect on the complex history of colonial encounters.
