Towering 13,025 feet (3,970 meters) above the town of Grindelwald, Eiger, named after the German word for ogre, is one of Switzerland’s most recognizable and fearsome mountains. Its near-vertical north face presents a notoriously challenging climb, having claimed numerous lives since the first successful ascent in 1938. Visitors today can marvel at the mountain’s imposing presence and the sheer rock faces that have tested the mettle of many climbers. The surrounding landscape offers breathtaking views and a sense of the mountain’s formidable nature.
