Six days a week, at precisely 12pm, the roar of blasting gunpowder echoes across Cape Town from Signal Hill. This tradition, known as the Noon Gun, dates back to 1806 when British colonists first instituted it. The cannons, one of a pair from the 18th century, have been in their current position at Lion Battery since 1902. Visitors can witness this historic ritual, which not only marks the passing of time but also offers a glimpse into Cape Town’s colonial past.
