Perched on a hill and offering spectacular city vistas, São Vicente de Fora Monastery stands as one of Lisbon’s most significant historical buildings. The original monastery was founded in 1147 after Christian forces recaptured Lisbon from the Almoravid Muslims. While the sumptuous decorations primarily date from the 17th and 18th centuries, visitors can still explore the 12th-century cistern. The monastery also serves as the final resting place for almost every Portuguese king from 1640 to 1910, adding to its historical importance.
