Kuelap Fortress

Perched strategically over the lush Utcubamba Valley, Kuelap Fortress stands as the largest stone ruin site in the New World, boasting ten times more stone than the Giza Pyramid. Encircled by a towering stone wall that rises 60 feet (18.2 meters) high, this vast archaeological complex encompasses around four hundred buildings. In its prime, the fortress housed thousands of residents, offering a glimpse into the pre-Inca civilization’s architectural and social sophistication. Today, visitors can explore the extensive ruins, marvel at the imposing walls, and imagine the bustling life that once thrived within this ancient citadel.
