Windmills of Kinderdijk

Just outside of Rotterdam, the Windmills of Kinderdijk stand as a testament to 17th-century engineering and are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These 19 windmills, set in a picturesque landscape, were originally built to pump water out of the low-lying land, showcasing the Dutch ingenuity in managing their watery environment. Today, visitors can explore the site, walk along the dykes, and even step inside some of the windmills to learn about their historical and functional significance. The windmills, with their iconic sails and sturdy structures, offer a glimpse into the Netherlands’ rich past and its enduring relationship with the sea.
