Akumal

Akumal, a town on the coast of Cozumel, Mexico, derives its name from the Mayan phrase meaning ‘place of the turtles.’ This horseshoe-shaped bay and lagoon are rich in sea grass, attracting various species of turtles that feed and nest here. Visitors can observe these shelled reptiles in their natural habitat, though ongoing coastal developments pose a threat to the nesting grounds, raising environmental concerns.
