Celestun

Celestun, located on the western coast of Mexico near Merida, is a haven for nature enthusiasts, especially those eager to spot pink flamingos. The area features a pleasant beach where visitors can relax, swim, or search for shells, but the main draw is the boat tours that venture into the lagoon. Here, large groups of flamingos can be seen flying and wading in the shallow waters, often in numbers reaching several dozen. The boat tours also include a visit to a ‘petrified forest’ with mangrove stumps emerging from the mud and a refreshing stop at a natural swimming hole filled with cool, clear spring water. After a day of wildlife viewing, visitors can enjoy fresh seafood, including shrimp ceviche and Gulf-caught fish, at the many affordable restaurants near the beach and town square.
