Azraq Castle, a desert fortress originally established by the Romans in 300 AD, stands in the heart of the Azraq Oasis in Jordan. The current structure, however, dates back to 1237 when it was rebuilt by the Mamelukes. This strategic location was chosen for its vital water source, the only one within a 7,000-square-mile radius. The castle’s most distinctive feature is its black-blue hue, derived from the basalt used in its construction. Today, visitors can explore the fortress and gain insight into its historical significance and the harsh yet beautiful desert environment that surrounds it.
